How to Use Alva’s Electric Motor Toolbox: A Step-by-step Guide
The Alva Electric Motor Toolbox is a free, browser-based set of interactive motor calculators designed to simplify electric motor design and system integration. In this article and video tutorial, we show how to calculate torque, speed, power, motor constants, frequency, angular conversions, encoder resolution, and more - quickly and accurately, without downloads or logins.

Where to Find the Toolbox
The Electric Motor Toolbox is available directly on our website.
Navigate to:
About → Tools & Resources → Toolbox
The tool runs entirely in your browser. No downloads, no logins, and no installation are required.
How It Works
The toolbox consists of several individual pages, each dedicated to a specific equation or conversion related to electric motor design.
Each page contains:
- An explanatory heading
- A number of input fields
- Fields that are automatically calculated
- A short explanatory text below the calculator
Some fields are intended to be filled in by the user. Once the required number of values has been entered, the remaining field is calculated automatically. Each calculator clearly indicates how many input fields must be completed before a result is generated.
Where applicable, it is also possible to switch to imperial units.
Torque - Speed - Power
This calculator covers the relationship between torque, speed, and power. By entering two known values, the third value is calculated automatically. For example, if torque and speed are entered, power is calculated. Alternatively, if power and torque are entered, speed can be calculated. This allows users to quickly evaluate the relationship between these three parameters.
Motor Constant
This allows calculation of the motor constant. By entering the torque constant and the line-to-line resistance, the motor constant is calculated automatically. The required number of input fields is clearly shown on the page.
Voltage Constant, Supplied Voltage and Available Speed
The toolbox also includes an equation that shows the correlation between voltage constant, supplied voltage, and available speed. This calculator can be used to understand what level of supply voltage is required in order to run a specific speed, provided that the voltage constant has already been selected.
As with the other calculators, the necessary input fields are clearly indicated.
Torque Constant and Current
Another equation in the toolbox can be used to calculate the torque constant. It can also be used to understand what torque constant is required to reach a specific torque when there is a limitation on current.
The calculator automatically determines the result once the required inputs are provided.
Correlation Between Motor Parameters
One of the pages presents a correlation between several motor parameters. On this page, only one value needs to be entered for the calculator to determine the remaining parameters. This allows users to quickly explore how these parameters are related.
Fundamental Frequency
The toolbox includes a calculator for fundamental frequency. To use this function, a value for the stator poles must be entered along with one additional value. The calculator then determines the corresponding result automatically.
Converters
Following the frequency calculator, the toolbox includes two converters. The first converter allows conversion between RPM and angular velocity. The second converter allows conversion between different levels of angular precision.
Reference Tables
The final two pages of the toolbox contain reference tables. One table describes the correlation between encoder bits and angular position.
The other table shows AWG sizes along with their respective diameter and cross-sectional area in millimeters.
Video Demonstration
In the accompanying video tutorial, our Application Engineer demonstrates how to locate the toolbox on the website and how to use each calculator.
The Electric Motor Toolbox is designed to make it straightforward to enter known values and obtain the required results directly in the browser.
