Tech Torqs #10: How to Achieve a High-Performing Electric Motor
How do you make a motor perform better? This episode of Tech Torqs explains why increasing diameter, improving cooling, and optimizing power electronics are key strategies for squeezing more performance from a fixed motor package
January 8, 2026

What makes a motor “high-performing”? In many applications, the answer starts with physics, torque scales with radius squared, so increasing the motor diameter can dramatically improve torque output and efficiency.
But when size is fixed, performance comes from optimization. In this episode of Tech Torqs, we cover key ways to boost motor performance:
- Increase diameter (if possible): More torque, better cooling
- Maximize thermal management: Better heat dissipation = more current handling
- Use efficient power electronics: Smooth commutation reduces losses
- Tune everything: Balance trade-offs between torque, size, mass, cooling, and control
Even small improvements in cooling or controller tuning can unlock significantly higher performance per unit of mass or volume.
