Custom motors are designed to meet specific application requirements that standard off-the-shelf motors cannot deliver. Unlike generic options, custom motors are designed to meet the unique needs of specific applications. This makes them essential for industries where adaptability is not only a wish but a requirement.

Alva Custom motors are designed by Alva’s engineers to meet the demands of companies that work with applications which cannot be matched by a product option from our standard catalogue or have very specific requirements in terms of size, torque, weight, integration, mechanical limits, speed, power requirements.

Alva´s unique and patented manufacturing technique called FiberPrinting™ allows for the customization of our motors.

SlimTorq Custom Motors

The SlimTorq™ frameless motor series is a solid foundation for custom builds. The stator outer diameters range from 25 to 160mm and can be done in any size smaller and bigger, with a Lite version for lightweight optimization and a Max version for maximum torque density. Further options include axial or radial cable exits, star or delta winding configurations on the fiber-printed mat, and optional integration of thermal and Hall sensors. Our SlimTorq™ motors are thin, compact, and were designed for applications where weight and size make a great difference in performance. Our FiberPrinting™ process enables designs of any dimension, ensuring a perfect fit for each application.

Custom Engineering for Demanding Applications

Creating a custom motor may involve modifying winding patterns, redesigning parts, and ordering customized magnet sizes. Alva adapts the focus to wherever it’s needed, whether it is weight, performance or a special environment the motor should operate in. We can adjust the housing geometry and the winding pattern to align with most requirements. What is the lead time for a custom motor?

Custom motors have typical development time of 16-20 weeks from specification to prototype. Faster developments can be sprinted as well.


What is the expected lifetime of a custom frameless motor?

SlimTorq™ frameless motors have virtually no mechanical wear, as they are brushless. With winding insulation rated for 20,000+ hours at 180 °C, lifetime is essentially unlimited as long as maximum stator temperature (140 °C) is not exceeded, and the integration is done as recommended by our engineering team.


Do the motors require active cooling?

The continuous torque and speed values in the SlimTorq™ product guide are specified assuming the motor is mounted in a small housing with some airflow. Depending on your application, additional cooling may improve performance. To determine exact needs you can use the Alva Product Selector or request a detailed thermal and performance study from Alva’s engineering team.


What winding configurations are possible to optimize torque constant or speed range?

Motors can be configured with different number of series turns and in Star (Y) or Delta (D) connections. This flexibility optimization for either higher torque constant or extended speed range.


Can custom motors be combined with precision gearboxes?

Yes. SlimTorq frameless motors, with their large inner diameter and low speed-dependent losses, are highly suitable for integration with precision gearboxes. They can be combined with all common types, including planetary, worm, strain wave, bevel, and cycloidal gearboxes, making them ideal for torque-demanding applications.
