Marine Thruster
Marine Thruster
Marine thrusters are propulsion devices that provide precise maneuvering and or propulsion to marine applications, often serving as the main propulsion system or as aid during docking and tight navigation. They can be used for boats, underwater vessels, inspection equipment and many other marine applications. A sub-group within this sort of equipment are rim-type thrusters, where an impeller provides a thrust through a fixed tube-like housing. These thrusters show for example great efficiency, low noise, reduced maintenance need and high compactness.
Alva’s introduction of the FiberPrinting™ technology, and the motors that are built with this technique, makes it possible to improve rim-thrusters dramatically. These motors deliver a high ID/OD ratio with very low speed dependent losses, perfect for rim-thursters which operate at high speeds and need room to fit the impeller in the centre. The non-skewed windings and high copper-fill factor allow for efficient and compact stators, which also can be submerged directly into water for increased cooling.

Alva Marine Thrusters
Alva has developed a marine thruster demonstrator called Hydra-100. This rim-thruster has a FiberPrinted™ stator built into the rim for maximizing the diameter of the impeller, as well as optimizing the cooling path for the motor. The rotor is directly integrated into the impeller, and makes it possible to maximize the thrust output. The outer diameter of the thruster is 135,6 mm, the axial length of the rim is 67,2 mm (total length with impeller 103,3 mm), and the weight of the system in water is 520g.

Custom Marine Thrusters
Thanks to the flexibility of the FiberPrinting™ manufacturing technique, being very flexible, it’s possible to make customize marine thrusters on request. This could mean a custom motor that is integrated into the final application, or a complete custom thruster. The FiberPrinting™ allows for custom sized stators to be produced, at different diameters, lengths and winding configurations. Together with the option to resize the magnets, completely different motors, and therefore thrusters, can be designed. Please consult us if you’re looking for a specific solution for your project.

Yes, our motors are typically rated to 72v and we can derive the speed-torque curves for any specific voltage supply within that range.
Yes, we can help out with suggesting suitable motors to a set of application requirements. And if we can’t find a match, we can also offer to create a custom design to match the need.
